Suman Giri
Suman Giri, Research Assistant and PhD Student at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh PA.
Suman Giri was born and raised in Nepal and moved to the US in 2007 for his undergraduate degree. He majored in Physics and Mathematics with Phi Beta Kappa Honors at Oberlin College, Ohio. Now, he is completing his MS/PhD degree in Civil Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, PA. His research (under Dr. Mario Berges) is on Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) where he looks to disaggregate appliance level power consumption data by monitoring the power features at the main circuit level. His research interests lie in Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition, and on using these tools to perform analysis on energy data and fault detection and diagnosis of appliances.
Suman Giri's Background
Suman Giri's Experience
R&D intern at Samsung Telecommunications America
May 2012 - August 2012
Worked at the Standards Research Lab with the Green Home task force on machine learning solutions to smart home initiatives- as an extension of my PhD research. The research I did here was a part of CMU-Samsung collaboration on Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring.
Research Assistant at Oberlin College
August 2009 - April 2011
Radio Astronomy Research with Dr. Dan Stinebring on a project to study the dynamic spectrum of pulsars with an objective to map out the properties of the interstellar medium. Used IDL, Mathematica etc. to study the scintillation patterns observed in the dynamic spectra of pulsar signals.
Market Research Intern at D&R International
May 2009 - August 2009
Worked with the market research team in developing a presentation to help the US Department of Energy develop possible standards for Battery Chargers and External Power Supplies. Studied the relative efficiencies of different models, helped with market survey, product price determination, usage profiles, and general criteria analysis. Helped write a market profile prompting all Utilities to promote the sales of Energy Star qualified Water heaters.
